ST. LOUIS “METRO” HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALLGOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THE STL “METRO” ATHLETES PREPPING FOR THE 2023 NFL DRAFT

THE NFL DRAFT

A DRAFT STORY – 40+ YEARS OLD -part one

TUESDAY APRIL 28, 1981 – NFL DRAFT DAY

BLIND – UNAWARE – WAITING

There was a chance no NFL team would even call…. I was more than anxious, still cautiously optimistic while knowing nothing about the proceedings … SILENCE NO INFO ………

– There was no INTERNET, Social Media, No iPhone or Laptop Computers. Cable TV was a new phenomenon yet unavailable to the masses. ESPN was a new sports network just over a year old and something I knew little to nothing about. I had an old rotary phone in my Off-Campus Dwelling, that I shared with 3 roommates. We had a “PARTY LINE”… LOL …. Anyone know what that is? – It’s a telephone line you shared with strangers. …. You could randomly pick up the phone and hear them talking. “I’m on the phone,” the familiar stranger would bark before I’d hang it up. The party line” helped us meet our anemic college budget.

Back in the day, you also had to pay for Long distance calls. We watched the Six-o’clock news on our black & white tv and read the local paper for a news cycle that was always a day behind.

The 80’s were a strange/different ERA ……… Well, where am I going with all of this? I didn’t know what round I’d be drafted in, ….when it might happen … or …. if it would happen at all…… Stay Tuned!
